01 / Ranking Guide

How do you get your website to the top of Google?

You cannot guarantee the top position, and a credible SEO provider should not try. Google’s Search Essentials describe the requirements and best practices that make pages eligible to appear, but eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving for a particular search.

What you can control is the quality of the opportunity you create:

  • select a commercially relevant search with realistic value;
  • assign it to the page best able to satisfy that intent;
  • remove technical barriers that prevent Google accessing or understanding the page;
  • make the content, proof and user experience genuinely useful; and
  • strengthen discovery through a logical site structure and legitimate external references.

A roofing company, for example, should not expect its homepage to be the best answer for every query. “Emergency roof repair Manchester”, “flat roof replacement” and “how long does a roof inspection take?” represent different needs. Each may require a different page and a different measure of success.

Key insight

Rank the right page for the right search. Position one for an irrelevant query is still a poor commercial result.

02 / Ranking Guide

Being indexed, ranking and generating enquiries are three different problems

Technical eligibility

A page cannot compete if Google cannot access or index it. Check the URL in Search Console. Review robots directives, noindex tags, canonical signals, redirects and important rendering problems. Make sure the page is linked from somewhere sensible on the site rather than existing as an orphan URL.

Technical work is a gate, not the whole strategy. Fixing an accidental noindex can create a visible change; passing a technical audit does not make an undifferentiated service page the best answer in a competitive market.

Relevance and usefulness

The page should make its purpose obvious in the title, H1 and opening copy, then satisfy the underlying need. Google recommends clear, concise page titles and helpful, reliable, people-first content. That means using customer language without repeating a phrase unnaturally, answering the decision questions that matter and adding knowledge that comes from doing the work.

For a service page, useful evidence may include the work covered, who it suits, process, realistic limitations, accreditations, genuine photos, service-area details, FAQs collected from customers and a clear path to enquire. More words are not automatically better. Information earns its place when it reduces uncertainty or helps the customer act.

Competitive strength and conversion

Google finds many pages through links. Internally, important pages should be reachable from relevant navigation, service hubs, location pages and articles using descriptive anchor text. Externally, legitimate references from suppliers, trade associations, publications, partners or local organisations can help discovery and credibility when they reflect real relationships.

Then the page must convert. A high ranking cannot compensate for an unclear offer, weak proof, a hidden phone number or a form nobody answers. Track the whole path from query to landing page to qualified enquiry.

Rule

Do not chase position one before confirming that the query, page and customer intent belong together.

03 / Ranking Guide

A practical framework for improving Google rankings

1. Choose the searches that matter

Use four inputs together: customer language, Search Console data, keyword research and commercial priorities. Identify the searches that describe a service you want to sell to a customer you can serve profitably. Separate informational questions from buying intent rather than treating all volume as equal.

Map each priority intent to one primary page. If three pages all target “commercial boiler repair”, decide which should lead and reposition, consolidate or redirect the others where appropriate. A clean map reduces internal competition and gives every page a defined job.

2. Make the page eligible and useful

Confirm indexability and canonicalisation before rewriting. Then compare the page with the actual result set: is Google returning service pages, local pages, guides, directories or product categories? The goal is not to copy competitors. It is to understand the format and decision need the query expresses.

Improve the page around that need. Write a descriptive title and H1. Answer the main question early. Add original service detail and evidence. Use images that clarify the work, with descriptive alt text. Make the next step clear on mobile. Remove sections that exist only to increase word count.

3. Strengthen the page’s place in the site and web

Link to the page from related content where a reader would genuinely want it. If an article explains boiler pressure problems, it can point to the repair service when the signs require professional help. A location page can link to the specific services available in that area. Avoid sitewide exact-match links added only for SEO.

Promote resources worth referencing. A useful maintenance checklist, original local data, technical explainer or well-documented project gives partners and publications a reason to cite the business. Links are an outcome of relevance and relationships, not a quantity target.

After a meaningful change, annotate the date and monitor impressions, clicks, landing-page engagement and enquiries. Change one strategic constraint at a time where possible so the result can be interpreted.

Generic SEO activity vs ranking work tied to a commercial query

DimensionWeak approachStronger approach
Keyword targetingPut the same keyword on several pagesChoose the best page for the intent and make its purpose unambiguous
ContentAdd words because competing pages are longAdd original information, proof and answers that make the page more useful
Internal linksInsert exact-match anchors wherever possibleConnect related pages where the link helps a person continue the task
MeasurementCelebrate any ranking increaseTrack priority queries, qualified organic traffic and enquiries from the pages that matter

This distinction keeps an SEO plan from becoming a list of disconnected tasks. Publishing four articles, changing 30 title tags and buying directory listings may look busy. The commercial question is whether those actions remove the constraint preventing an important page from earning useful visibility.

05 / Ranking Guide

What should you do first if your website is not ranking?

Name the query and page. Replace “the site does not rank” with a specific problem such as “the commercial cleaning page receives no impressions for office cleaning searches in Leeds.”

Check eligibility. Confirm the preferred page is crawlable, indexed, canonical and internally discoverable.

Compare the intent. Review what the searcher wants and whether the page format, promise and depth match that need.

Find the strongest constraint. Decide whether the gap is technical, content quality, local relevance, internal support, external authority or conversion.

Measure the intervention. Record the baseline, make the change and review the intended leading and commercial metrics before scattering effort elsewhere.

You do not get to the top of Google by completing the most SEO tasks. You improve your chances by making the right page the clearest, most useful and most credible answer you can for a commercially relevant search-then measuring whether that visibility becomes real work.
